jump cut dance film festival

Hannah Maclure Centre is proud to present the very first Dance Film festival in Dundee - a week long celebration of movement and film incorporating screenings, performances and talks from the 20th to the 27th April 2012.

Friday 20th April 7.30pm - Launch event.

Scottish Dance Theatre
SDT is Scotland's national contemporary dance company and is part of the Rep Theatre. For Jump Cut they will present a talk based around the idea of film and its influence on their choreographic ideas/methods.

SPK is led by award-winning choreographer Thomas Small, former Choreographer in Residence at The Space, Dundee. Thomas will also be discussing how film has influenced SPK's work.

Scottish Dance Youth Theatre and Smallpetitklein will perform in the gallery space, showcasing their amazing talent for devising dynamic, thought-provoking work. Also featuring on the night will be one of The Space's bright young talents, Jess Todd, who will present her multimedia piece 'The Youth Of Today' - an exploration of the freedom of youth throughout history. (Dancer: Kajsa Lundahl, visuals: Sam Kelly)

Saturday 21st April 2.30pm - Matinee screening

DV8 Physical Theatre is about taking risks - both physical and aesthetic. 'The Cost of Living' is by turns hard-hitting and exhilarating, challenging notions of dance and demonstrating how expansive and indicual the medium can be.

Sasha Waltz
A worldwide acclaimed choreographic cycle about the human body based on the project 'Dialoge 99/11' in the still empty Jewish Museum Berlin built by Daniel Libeskind. An exploration of how dancer's bodies relate to architecture, science and history, the search for the origin of life and the metaphysical existence of humanity.

Go-At and Plan B
Set in the dramatic West Highlands of Scotland, 'Away From Here' examines the fleeting relationship of people to a sense of place and belonging; exploring the incongruity of our relationship to an ancient landscape.

Saturday 21st April 7.30pm - Musicals evening

Dundee Schools Music Theatre
DSMT takes pupils from all of Dundee's secondary schools and perform across the region, bringing a youthful vitality and exuberance to the classic musicals. For Jump Cut they will perform scenes from much-loved examples of the genre - an event for all the family to enjoy.

West Side Story
Leonard Bernstein's academy award-winning movie musical that set a standard for musicals which remains unsurpassed to this day. Featuring an unforgettable score and groundbreaking choreography, the film sets the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet against the backdrop of gang warfare in 1950's New York. Don't miss this opportunity to see it on the big screen.

Monday 23rd April 7.30pm - New works

Emerging and established artists share their latest work that breaks the boundaries of dance performance by using integrated digital media and fresh approaches to choreography. Featuring work gathered from across the UK and abroad.

Wednesday 25th April 7.30pm - Dance workshop

Agne Auzelyte (The Space) and Rachael Haughton (Central St Martins) lead a special workshop exploring shadows and shape through integrating costume design and dance. Places extremely limited, pre-booking essential.

Friday 27th April 7.30pm - Community Dance

JAM Collective
A creative collective of film-makers, writers, cinematographers and production crew who meet with the intention of creating a short film in a short time frame, working creatively and collaboratively on low to no budgets. Featuring films made with dancers from The Space and community dance groups across Dundee.

'Little Steps & Second Steps' is about SPK's creative classes for children and their parents, combining movement and play to spark the imagination and develop skills in dance & movement. Accompanied by a short film encouraging young boys to take part in and enjoy the benefits of dance.
