Shot in 16mm, FUNNY HA HA examines life after college in an understated and moving way. Everything about FUNNY HA HA feels familiar, from the characters to the dialogue. Focusing more on character than on plot, the film revolves loosely around Marnie (Dollenmayer), an attractive and intelligent young woman searching clumsily for some sense of purpose in what seems at times like an aimless life.

Josh has failed at being a musician in NYC. Josh has failed at being a booking agent. Josh's life is pretty much in the toilet. He decides to purchase a 1985 Lazy Boy on EBay, just like the one from his childhood living room, and deliver it cross-country to his father as a surprise birthday gift. Things get complicated when his girlfriend Emily wants to come, as she wants to have the "where do we stand" conversation. When his pseudo-granola brother, Rhett, begs to join them on their adventure it quickly becomes three very different people and a giant purple puffy chair in a too small van and one of them has to go before the trip's end.
