500 Miles North

26 July – 27 August 2010

Opening reception 23 July 7pm - 9pm

Clare Brennan, Julia Douglas, Elin Isaksson, Margaret Livingstone, Roddy Mathieson, Janey Muir, Louisa Preston

Curated by Clare Brennan, 500 Miles North are seven visual artists living and working across Scotland, all have been voted as the brightest and best future rising stars by Courvoisier The Future 500. Having all achieved significant success in the Scottish art world, they have joined forces to help each other achieve even greater success by creating a unique exhibition, which highlights a flavour of the emerging contemporary talent in Scotland, enabling them to share creative visions and to inspire through collaboration.

Although they have this accolade in common, they are all on individual journeys of exploration and aim to continue to research and develop personal interests for this show. There are, however, particular themes within their practice that tie them together, the most obvious of these is the group interest in exploring the natural and built environment. The transient nature of both of these as well as their permanent factors and how, us humans affect them. Ultimately, they are striving to make sense of the everyday world and tell a visual story about these findings.

Their practise as individuals straddles a huge variety of disciplines: from the traditional fine art techniques of drawing, painting, print-making, photography and bronze casting, through design processes such as glass blowing, textiles, ceramics and architectural glass and model making, to more contemporary mixed media, performance and installation based works. All of these processes will be apparent within this excitingly diverse exhibition of two and three-dimensional works, which will be exhibited both within the gallery and in the adjoining outside space.
